Reciprocity was also the general principal used by Claude Lévi-Strauss to explain the Elementary Structures of Kinship (1949), in one of the most influential works on kinship theory in the post-war period. Marshall Sahlins (1972) built on Mauss’s work and identified three types of reciprocity: Generalized reciprocity: a form of reciprocity in which gifts are given freely without the expectation of return. Balanced reciprocity: a form of reciprocity in which the giver expects a fair return at some later time. 2017-08-02 2006-10-20 Sahlins (1972: 194-195) further elaborated on aspects of Polanyi's reciprocal mode with generalized, negative, and balanced reciprocity.Generalized and negative reciprocity are opposite ends of a continuum (see Figure 2-1, above).

charity abstract To add greater theoretical precision to a fundamental construct in social exchange theory – namely, Gouldner's ‘norm of reciprocity’, this study developed a measure of Sahlins' generalize Reciprocity and justice. Standard usage of the term justice shows its close general connection to the concept of reciprocity. Justice includes the idea of fairness, and that in turn includes treating similar cases similarly, giving people what they deserve, and apportioning all other benefits and burdens in an equitable way. Marshall Sahlins, an American cultural anthropologist, identified three main types of reciprocity (generalized, balanced and negative) in the book Stone Age Economics (1972).

Sahlins questioned Polanyi's use of reciprocity as an ideal-type characterizing all societies lacking a political center. A range of kinds of reciprocity can thus be sketched out, according to Sahlins: Generalized reciprocity refers to putatively altruistic transactions, the "true gift" marked by "weak reciprocity" due Balanced or Symmetrical reciprocity refers to direct exchange of customary equivalents without any Marshall David Sahlins (/ ˈ s ɑː l ɪ n z / SAH-linz; December 27, 1930 – April 5, 2021) was an American cultural anthropologist best known for his ethnographic work in the Pacific and for his contributions to anthropological theory. Givers in this sort of exchange are altruistic and do not expect recipients to pay back in a predetermined period of time with something of equal value. Instead, Marshall Sahlins is the one who defined the term, negative reciprocity, I believe. He states it is to define economic deception, where one tries to reap the benefit without paying the cost. Fruad, theft, and ruthless haggling are all under the term, negative reciprocity.

Its emblematic feature is generous sharing, which generates gratitude and an open-ended, diffuse obligation to make a return. Balanced reciprocity features overt concern for Sahlins’s (1965a and b, 1972/74) elaboration of reciprocity and the links between material flow and social relations in primitive economies particularly interests me.

Sahlins (1972) used these three dimensions to reflect a continuum of reciprocity from negative reciprocity to balanced to generalized reciprocity. Negative reciprocity was characterized as high on equivalence and immediacy of return and low concern for the other. 2009-06-03 Malinowski, 1922; Sahlins, 1972). An anthropologist, Marshall Sahlins, is an anthropologist who studied culture and history, particularly in Pacific societies. Sahlins argues that chiefly redistribution is not different in principle and nothing but a highly organized form of kinship-rank reciprocity. Others, such as French Marxist anthropologist Claude Meillassoux, used the development of ranked kin redistribution from generalized reciprocity as the basis for a lineage mode of production found in western African chiefdoms and kingdoms. “Marshall Sahlins is one of the great names of modern anthropology, but thus far he has not counted as one of the key figures in the study of kinship. . . .
