Hence, when studying burnout outside the human services, either the MBI has to be adapted or an entirely new instrument has to be developed. The central goal of the present study is to introduce and test a new instrument for the measurement of burnout -the OLdenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI; Demerouti, 1999;Demerouti & Nachreiner, 1998). The job demands-resources model has implications for burnout, as measured by the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI). Physical and psychological job demands were concurrently associated with the exhaustion, as measured by the OLBI. Presence of depressive symptoms, female gender, inability to control one's schedule, and work setting were significantly associated with higher OLBI scores. Burnout, female gender, resident or early-career stage, and nonacademic setting practice were significantly associated with higher PHQ-9 scores. Medical studies are highly loaded with psychological stressors and the addition of family-work conflict could lead to students having a higher risk of becoming burned out. This was confirmed by the fact that those who admitted having strains and difficulties in their personal relationships had about three units more of burnout on the OLBI scale.
